Raising Awareness and Giving Back
Kelly's Fundraising StoryAt Ups and Downs Southwest, we are continually inspired by the incredible efforts of the families we support. This October, Kelly McDaid, mum to Tomás, organized a fantastic fundraiser to mark Down Syndrome Awareness Month and show her appreciation for the help and support she’s received since Tomás was born last year.
Kelly’s journey started with a desire to raise awareness. She partnered with Merchants Academy, where students participated in a week of activities and events to learn about Down Syndrome and celebrate inclusion. But Kelly didn’t stop there.
“I wanted to do something myself,” Kelly shared, “so I decided to run a raffle.” With determination and community spirit, Kelly reached out to local businesses for prizes, including contributions from Asda, Mendip Activity Centre, Browns Restaurant, Turtle Bay Restaurant, Nando’s, Costa Coffee, Fluff N Shine By Gem, Sweet Treats, Bossy Baby, Twinnys Discount, and Bristol City FC.
Thanks to Kelly’s efforts and the generosity of the local community, her raffle raised £100 for Ups and Downs Southwest. “The charity has done so much for me since Tomás was born last August,” Kelly said, “especially Rachael Maddox, who’s always been there offering help and support throughout the year. I just wanted to show my appreciation and give something back.”
At Ups and Downs Southwest, we are so grateful for Kelly’s kindness and dedication. Her story is a reminder of the power of community and the difference one person can make.
Joanna Thorn, Director of Ups and Downs Southwest, shared:
“Kelly’s efforts are a shining example of the incredible families we have the privilege of supporting. Her fundraiser not only raised vital funds but also helped spread awareness and understanding about Down Syndrome. We are so grateful for her generosity and the amazing impact she’s had.”
