music singing and signing session
Weston super Mare Youth ClubMusic, Singing and Signing Session at Weston-super-Mare Youth Club
We had a fantastic time at our music, singing, and signing session on Tuesday.
As always, we began with our check-in, where young people shared their feelings and learned new Makaton signs for ‘Music’ and ‘Singing’.
The room came alive with energy as everyone joined in a vocal warm-up. Through call-and-response, young people filled the space with rhythmic clapping, stomping, and a wide range of vocal sounds. There was a real sense of excitement and connection as we marched like ants, wiggled like worms, and transformed into butterflies, focusing on breath and movement. Visual and verbal descriptions, clear modelling, and Makaton signs ensured the session was inclusive for everyone.
Next, the group explored rhythm and sound during a lively drum circle. Visual prompts: images of caterpillars, wiggly worms, and ants; helped guide the group as they tapped out syllables and created rhythms for others to follow. The creativity and confidence on display were inspiring.
We then transitioned to Makaton signing, with Nikki, our brilliant tutor, leading the group in learning the signs to *You’ve Got a Friend in Me* (from *Toy Story*). Nikki delivered the session at a pace that kept everyone engaged and supported, and the young people enthusiastically picked up the signs.
Young people could sing their favourite songs on the karaoke machine to end the session. They supported each other by singing, dancing, and playing percussion instruments. Being able to choose their songs gave everyone a sense of ownership and pride. The cheers and smiles at the end perfectly reflect the group’s spirit—and a reminder of just how meaningful the lyrics to *You’ve Got a Friend in Me* are, as friendships continue to blossom in our welcoming and supportive club.
